GABBRO:
A coarse grained, basic, plutonic rock, consisting mainly of calcic plagioclase and pyroxene, sometimes with olivine.
GAS OIL:
Red diesel for use in quarry vehicles and plant
GRADED:
Aggregate created by a combination of two or more single size aggregates to BS882 grading specification, for example 20-5mm graded aggregate combines 20mm and 10mm single sizes at a rate of approximately 2:1.
GRADING - PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION:
The percentages of the grain sizes present in an aggregate or filler as determined by sieving.
GRANULAR SUB-BASE TYPE 1 AND 2:
Also know as GSB TYPE 1 and 2, MOT TYPE 1 and 2. A granular graded material with a maximum permitted size of 75 mm down to dust, as specified in the Department of Transport Specification of Highway Works, Series 800. Type 1 material must be of a crushed nature to provide a stable sub-base for road surfaces. Type 2 tends to be specified for roads with lower trafficking and therefore may contain uncrushed material.
GRANULES:
A commonly used description of aggregate smaller than 3mm.
GRAVEL:
Coarse aggregate.
GRITSTONE:
A sandstone, with coarse and usually angular grains.
GRIT:
A commonly used term for Washed Concrete Sand or Sharp Sand.
GRIZZLY:
Large grid over which the primary crusher feed is fed, so clay and small stones can be scalped off.
GROUND:
Is where the material is broken down by wear against itself or some other harder material or surface.
GROUTING:
The operation of introducing a binder into the interstices of a material in situ under the action either of gravity or applied pressure.
GUSSAPHALT:
Material laid in Germany similar to mastic asphalt.
