B

BAGHOUSE:
This is part of a dust extraction plant, which contains the filter bags

BALLAST AS DREDGED:
The raw material dredged from the seabed.

BALLAST:
In days of the clipper ships, when occasionally the ship had to sail from one port to another without cargo to provide stability in the hold, the ships used to fill their holds with material from the local beaches. This provided the additional "ballast" required allowing the ship to safely sail to its next cargo. Ballast generally is used to describe a coarse and fine aggregate mix, and is commonly preceded in BS882 descriptions with the nominal maximum size of stone allowed, for example: 20mm ballast.

BARMAC:
Type of rotary crusher that uses the action of stone against stone to break the material. This is in an effort to reduce wear rates.

BARREL:
(a) The long rotating drum where aggregates is dried on a coating plant. (b) A rotating drum where aggregate is washed on a Sand and Gravel operation.

BASALT:
A fine-grained basic volcanic rock, similar in composition to gabbros.

BASECOURSE:
A layer in the surfacing of a road pavement immediately below the wearing course

BATCH MIXER:
In this type of coating plant where a pre-set amount of aggregate and bitumen are mixed at one time. This varies from 250 Kg. to 6000 Kg. Both the type of mix and the batch size determine the plant capacity: mixing times may vary with the type of mix. A 2500 Kg. batch, for example, requiring a mixing time of 60 seconds, will give a maximum plant capacity of 150 tonnes per hour.

BATCHER:
The person in charge of operating a plant which mixes readymix concrete, aggregates or coated materials

BEDDING:
Aggregate onto which slabs, blocks or pipes are laid. Usually single size for pipes and coarse sand or coarse dust for blocks and slabs.

BELT WEIGHER:
Equipment fixed to a conveyer that weighs the material carried on the conveyer.

BENCH:
Working levels of the quarry face

BINDER:
An adhesive used to hold aggregate together in a coherent mass or, as in a surface dressing, to stick chippings to a road surface or to coat chippings used in surface dressing or scattered on the surface of a wearing course.

BIN:
A large container of processed aggregate holding anything from 1 tonne to 60 tonnes.

BIT' MAC':
Bitumen Macadam, coated macadam in which the binder is wholly or substantially bitumen.

BIT' SAND:
Bitumen Sand, a mixture of natural sand and bitumen, used mainly for the bases of large steel storage tanks.

BITUMEN EMULSION:
Dispersion of bitumen in water with an emulsifying agent.

BITUMEN:
Viscous liquid, or solid, consisting essentially of hydrocarbons and their derivatives, which is soluble in Methylene Chloride and is substantially non-volatile and softens gradually when heated. It is black or brown in colour and possesses water proofing and adhesive properties. It is obtained by refinery processes from petroleum, and is also found as a natural deposit or as a component of naturally occurring asphalt in which it is associated with mineral matter.

BITUMINOUS:
That contains road tar, bitumen, pitch or mixtures thereof.

BLACK JACK:
A very viscous heavy-duty lubricant used mainly on large drive chains or gears.

BLACK TOP:
All road materials produced by coating with bitumen.

BLAST:
The breaking up of the quarry face with the use of explosives.

BLEEDING (ASPHALT):
The exuding of binder from bituminous surfacing in hot weather. (See fatting-up).

BLEEDING (CONCRETE):
The term given to the process by which water rises to the surface giving a puddling effect on top of the laid concrete. This is caused by excessive water in the mix, particularly prominent in cold weather

BLINDING:
(a) The application of a loose layer of fine material to reduce surface voids.
(b) Damp material especially fines will tend to adhere to screen decks, reducing the effective aperture and creating what is known as "blinding".
(c) Term to describe a layer, usually of sand , placed above a drainage material to prevent a further overlying material from contamination. Normally used in drainage applications and leisure materials.

BLOCK STONE:
Rock selected from a blast, which is suitable for building walls

BOMAG:
A type of two-wheeled roller that can be vibrated to give added compaction.

BORE-TRACK:
A system of checking a hole drilled for blasting is straight and does not curve towards the face or other holes.

BRE DIGEST 363:
The Building Research Establishment document that deals with the specification of sulphate resisting concrete.

BS5328:
The British Standard that deals with the specification, design and production of concrete.

BS812:
The British Standard that deals with the requirements for testing aggregates to BS882.

BS882:
The British Standard that deals with the specification and grading requirements of aggregates from natural sources for concrete.

BUCKET:
The part of a loading shovel that is used to pick up aggregate and load it in vehicles or feed bins.

BUILDING SAND:
A naturally occurring sand which complies with B.S.1200 and can be used for mortar for laying bricks or wall rendering.

BULK DENSITY:
The volume occupied by an aggregate. Either loose, where the aggregate is placed into a cylinder of a known volume and weighed, or compacted, where the aggregate is placed into the same cylinder and tamped down in layers and then weighed. This is expressed in Kg / M3.

BUND:
A wall of earth or brick which will contain oil, silt or other similar liquids, to contain them in the event of a spillage. A large bund may be used to hide unsightly plant from view.
